CBS Roscommon vs. Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaran
The CBS senior rugby team travelled to Ballyhaunis on Wednesday 25th of November to play Carraroe in the senior development league final. The game was delayed by a half hour due to the junior development league final going to extra time. When the game finally got going, the team put on a show of top class rugby. The match was played in sunny conditions with a slight cross field breeze.
CBS received first and got off to the worst possible start, having the ball overturned and allowing Carraroe in for a try between the posts within the first 3 minutes. Straight from the off however, CBS were in Carraroes half putting on the pressure, leading to a great team try, completed by second centre Jason Hoare. The next 15 minutes were back and forth with good tackling from Melvin Conteh, Edward Clinton and captain, Michael Feeley, with backs Shane Purcell, Conor Shanagher and Michael Farrell. This work rate paid off with the CBS getting their second try of the day. This time Michael Feeley crashed over which was duly converted by Michael Farrell. Continuing this high work rate the CBS were awarded with their third try of the day. Hooker Sean Doorly and Eoghan Coyle linking up well to allow Ryan Biesty to power through to earn his try. Again, Michael Farrell converted. The last 7 minutes of the half was in Carranroe’s favour but due to great defending, they never broke through.
Half Time Score: CBS 19-7 Carranroe
CBS started the second half with great confidence coming close to a fourth try on a few occasions within the first 10 minutes of the half. Shane Purcell, Daire Byrne, Niall Cunniffe and Conor Shanagher all being held up just short of the tryline. Carranroe kicked into gear and broke out of their half but hard tackling from Daire Byrne, Ryan Biesty and John Murray stopped them from making any good progression. All this tackling finally paid off with Sean Doorly winning a penalty which Michael Farrell put between the posts, stretching the lead even more. Carranroe again tried to break out, this time getting into the CBS 22’’ after their first centre made a blistering run only to be stopped by full back, James McNally. As the second half came to a close, the CBS defended bravely and finished out the match as deserving winners.
