Rugby European Cup Leinster Leinster suffered their third successive European Cup defeat last week as their gloomy campaign continued. They faced up to a big Toulon team and lost the game 24-9 in the end. After an apparent brilliant defensive display by the Leinster men they conceded 14 points without reply in the second half of the match. Poor discipline seemed to really cost Leinster in the match as Cian Healy, Devin Toner and Tom Denton were all sin binned during the game. There was hope for Leinster at half time and Toulon only led by a margin of just ten points to nine. Leo Cullen’s men didn’t score at all in the second half and once more Johnny Sexton was the only scorer. Eric Escande really produced the goods for Toulon as Leinsters discipline cost them and Escande had no problem in converting the penalties. The two tries were scored by mauls and were cleverly worked by Toulon. Where to now for Leinster however? They stand at the bottom of the pool with just one point on the board? They have two more games left in the cup and it isn’t looking likely that they’ll win any. It looks like the “World Cup Hangover” is continuing for the Leinster men. Munster Munster also had a very bad week when they were defeated at home by Leicester Tigers. “A deserved victory” is the way that the match has been described in favour of Leicester Tigers. Leicester scored three tries compared to only two scored by the Munster men. Discipline affected Munster a bit as Leicester popped over four penalties. Munster’s defence seemed to let them down somewhat as they conceded three tries. Ian Keatley aided Munster slightly as he slotted three penalties over the bar but he also missed a few ones that could’ve helped Munster even more during the match. Leicester have never lost to Munster away and vice a versa. Munster will face them away in their next European Cup game. Munster are now in third position in their pool and will be looking to qualify in their group. They are not struggling as much as Leinster but it is still not to promising for Munster. Ulster Although not a very convincing start for the Ulster men they had a brilliant victory at the weekend after they wiped Toulouse away with a 38-0 victory. With a half time score of 17-0 the Ulster men trounced Toulouse with five unanswered tries. Jackson was prolific with his kicking and slotted over everything and Trimble, Chris Henry, Luke Marshall, Mc Closkey and Williams led the way with the tries. Ulster’s Rugby and style was key at the weekend and their performance was described as the best ever in the European Cup tournament. Connacht Connacht remained 1st in their pool after a lovely victory to Newcastle tigers. It was a close encounter in the first half and Connacht went in ahead with a score line of just 9-6 at the break. Connacht really pulled away in the second half as a Man of the Match performance from Jack Carty proved vital as he got 20 points in the game. Connacht look to be a very hot prospect in the Challenge Cup at the moment and seem to be in a comfortable position in their pool. Their injury list could be a serious worry for them however as their captain Tiernan O’ Halloran pulled up with a calf strain and remains to be their 19th injury at the moment. DARRAGH O'CONNOR |

DARRAGH O'CONNOR On Thursday the 3rd of December, Roscommon CBS 1st year football team took on Carrick Community School in their final league group game. CBS were in the driving seat in the group siting at the top of the table going in to the game, needing a win to maintain this spot. The CBS had a nervy start to the game, and Carrick played the better football. Carrick went 1-1 to no score up before CBS got going. Then the men in red and white struck gold with a goal. A fine move resulted in Aaron Glennon firing the ball the back of the net. Both teams swapped scores before Carrick hit another 1-1 without reply to leave the score 2-3 to 1-1 with only a few minutes left in the half. Then Mr. Bracken and Willie Hegarthy made a tactical decision by bringing on Michael Corcoran which proved a master stroke when the full forward lopped the Carrick goalkeeper to get the CBS back in the game with a goal. That was the last action of the half, with then halftime score line reading Carrick Community School 2-3 to CBS Roscommon 2-1 Whatever the management said to the CBS team at half time must have worked as the CBS started the second half like a train, they scored 5 points without reply with scores from Darragh Hynes and Alan Merriman, and then Carrick got going and had wonderful chances but were stopped by a wonderful performance from Cian Feeley in goal. But Feeley could do nothing to stop Carrick from finally getting their first score of the half with a finely worked goal which was aided by the mucky goalmouth as the initial shot seemed to going wide only for the ball to stop dead in the mud which left a tap in for the Carrick player. CBS had a numerous amount of chances to get scores after the goal but squandered them until Merriman slotted home a free to give his a team a little bit of breathing space. The final few moments were frantic with Carrick desperate to find an equalising goal. Their best opportunity came at the very end of the game when Cian Feeley saved a shot and then the rebound was saved, the play turned into a goalmouth scramble, with nobody knowing where the ball would end up eventually it seemed corner back Briain Costello dived on the ball to stop it from crossing the line! That was the last action of the game as the referee blew the final whistle moments later. Final Score: CBS Roscommon 2-9 to 3-3 Carrick Community School This is a great achievement for the team to finish the group with 8 points out of a possible 10 only losing out to St. Nathys earlier on in the year with a last minute goal, so the lads should be proud of themselves! If results go there way they can qualify for the league semi-final in the new-year. Things are looking bright for the CBS in footballing point of view and long may it continue! By Liam Earley. The first year team played Carrick on Shannon in a cold wet windy day in Lisnamult on Thursday last. The CBS got off to a great start with Daniel O’Brien pointing from a twenty one yard free. However Carrick responded with a great goal from a strong run down the heart of the CBS backline. Then from the resulting kick out Aaron Glennon ran through and scored a great goal in the Carrick net. The CBS lads worked tirelessly for the next 10 minutes to kill out any threat of a Carrick goal. The CBS half forward line were working superbly both in attack and tracking back. Before the break Carrick snatched a goal as did the CBS. The teams were set up perfectly for an exciting second half of football. After the break the CBs got off to a great start with 4 unanswered points from Alan Merriman , Darragh Hynes and substitute Oisin O’Connor. The Cbs full back line were under immense pressure now but held out for 15 mins when Carrick got a point from play .The CBS boys held out for a brilliant team performance and are on a high going into the Christmas break. Conor McGregor as most people know is an Irish born UFC fighter from Co Dublin. He is one of the UFC’s most highly rated fighters and is world renowned for his excellent in ring ability but also for his unmatchable on mic ability during interviews and pre fight analysis. He brings a new standard to “trash talk”.McGregor was expected to face current champion Jose Aldo on 11 July 2015 at UFC 189 for the undisputed UFC featherweight championship However, in the days leading up to the fight, Aldo pulled out of the bout because of a rib injury he had sustained in training. McGregor remained on the card and faced UFC ranked #1 contender chad Mendes for the interim championship. McGregor walked out to the Octagon in front of more than sixteen thousand attendees as Sinead o Connor performed a live rendition of foggy dew.McGregor was taken down several times by the All-American wrestler in the first round, but was able to score a second-round TKO after getting back up to his feet with 3 seconds left in the round and winning the fight with just 3 seconds left, winning the UFC Interim Featherweight Championship. STEPHEN KENNEDY World Sport in October
October 2015 was a jam-packed month of sport. Starting with the biggest event of the month, the Rugby World Cup was one of the best in recent memory. The United Kingdom were excellent hosts. All host nations put in a great performance in the group stages, bar England who exited before the knockout rounds after some poor performances. Ireland tried their hardest but Argentina were just too strong for a battered and bruised Irish side who were missing key players such as Johnny Sexton, Sean O’Brien, Peter O’Mahony and of course Paul O’Connell. The All Blacks were the form team of the tournament, decimating France and going on to beat South Africa. Australia were to be the All Blacks final opponents after impressive displays against Scotland and Argentina. The final was a great event and did not disappoint. Tries from Nehe Milner Skudder, Ma’a Nonu and Beauden Barrett secured New Zealand’s victory. Australia put up a good fight through the likes of David Pocock and Brendan Foley, but Dan Carter was to be the difference in a Man of the Match performance. In tennis October was Novak Djokovic’s month by doing a clean sweep of the major tennis tournaments. He picked up the China Open, Shanghai Rolex Masters and also the BNP Paribas Masters. In Formula One the big event was the United States Grand Prix, which was successfully defended by Lewis Hamilton and his team, Mercedes. The event was held in torrential conditions but Lewis prevailed as the winner. UFC had yet another stellar month, coming to Dublin yet again for another sell-out. The main event pitted Dublin’s Paddy Holohan against Louis Smolka. After a great fight, Smolka submitted Holohan in a rear naked choke hold. In their biggest event of the month, UFC 192, the main event saw Daniel ‘DC’ Cormier defeat Alexander Gustafsson to defend his Light Heavyweight Title via split decision. Earlier in the night, Ryan Bader defeated Rashad Evans to further his chances of a title fight against Cormier. Gavin C (Ezine) The History Of Rugby
The sport of rugby is named after Rugby School, where the game was first played. The game is said to have been invented in 1823 when William Webb Ellis caught the ball while playing a game of football* at school, and ran to the goal with it. Although there is doubt about whether this actually happened, Webb Ellis is still remembered as the sport's inventor and the winner of the Rugby Union World Cup, held every four years, receives the Webb Ellis Cup. Rugby is known for the use of oval-shaped balls. However they were not always this shape they used to be the shape of a plum, initially they were spherical by the end of the 19th century when rubber was used inside them instead of a pig’s bladder. The reigning Rugby Olympic champion is that famous (?) rugby-playing nation, the United States! The game of rugby has only has only been an Olympic sport four times and made its first and last Olympic Games appearances in Paris. The first time it was played was in 1900 during the Paris Olympics. It was played again in the London Olympics of 1908, next in the 1920 Antwerp Olympics and finally in the 1924 Paris Olympics. As well as being the current Olympic champion, the United States is also the most successful nation winning gold in both the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games. A seven-a-side version of Rugby will make an appearance in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The first time a national anthem was sung before a sporting event happened, kind of spontaneously, before a rugby game. New Zealand famously dance the Haka before the start of a game of rugby, a traditional war-dance which is sometimes seen as an attempt to intimidate their opposition. On 16th November 1905 they played Wales at Cardiff Arms Park. After New Zealand danced the Haka before the match, Wales responded by beginning to sing the Welsh national anthem, ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ (not sure what it means, but it probably isn't anything to do with chickens). The crowd picked up on this and joined in. Nowadays, before major sporting events, it is traditional for the national anthems of the countries being represented to be sung beforehand. The Rugby World Cup game with the highest number of points was 162 from the match played on 4th June 1995 when New Zealand beat Japan 145 points to 17. The first international rugby match took place between Scotland and England in 1871 at Raeburn Park in Edinburgh. Scotland won1-0 by converting a try. The scorer, and therefore the first player to score an international rugby goal, was William Cross. If the modern scoring system was used, the score would have been 12-5 to Scotland, who scored two tries and one conversion. England achieved one try but failed to convert. Junior schools rugby league
