The town of Sligo came alive on the 10th of August when musicians, singers and dancers young and old from all corners of the country arrived for a week of the best music and craic of the whole year. It had been 20 years since the Fleadh was in Sligo and it promised to be a great week.
President Michael. D. Higgins opened the Fleadh on Sunday evening at the Gig Rig after which a group of young musicians, singers and dancers from all over Connacht took to the stage to entertain the huge crowd that had gathered. The Gig Rig then became the heart of the town providing the best of entertainment for the rest of the week.
Every night the streets of Sligo were thronged with people of all ages and the atmosphere was electric. Every pub was packed with musicians and festival goers and there was music being played in every corner.
Scoil Eigse, the music summer school, took place during the day from Monday to Thursday with hundreds of children and adults taking part. This summer school is so popular because of the outstanding tuition.
The competitions in music, singing and dancing ran from Friday to Sunday. There were hundreds of competitors over the weekend and this year's all Ireland champions were named.
Another great week is expected next year when the Fleadh returns to Sligo for a second year.
