Recently, there has been a trend on Facebook, Twitter and other social media, where people would nominate their friends to do an “Ice Bucket Challenge” and donate a small sum of money to the ALS Foundation. It’s a nice idea, it just wasn’t done correctly, since now, it seems people have forgotten about the original reason for the challenge, and are throwing buckets of ice over each others heads “for the craic”.
Before the internet, people would give the odd couple of euro to a guy standing outside the local Supervalu on a saturday afternoon, and it would raise money for a worthwhile cause, and everybody was happy. But, with the rise of social media, people think that dumping ice over their heads is enough, and that they are doing their bit to help with charities. Raising awareness is important, but it isn’t going to pay for the well needed research for people that suffer with ALS
The Ice Bucket Challenge does have it’s bonuses, with people such as Charlie Sheen donating $10,000 to the ALS Foundation instead of the challenge, which is a much better idea than just putting water over your head, isn’t it?
