Recently, there has been a trend on Facebook, Twitter and other social media, where people would nominate their friends to do an “Ice Bucket Challenge” and donate a small sum of money to the ALS Foundation. It’s a nice idea, it just wasn’t done correctly, since now, it seems people have forgotten about the original reason for the challenge, and are throwing buckets of ice over each others heads “for the craic”. Before the internet, people would give the odd couple of euro to a guy standing outside the local Supervalu on a saturday afternoon, and it would raise money for a worthwhile cause, and everybody was happy. But, with the rise of social media, people think that dumping ice over their heads is enough, and that they are doing their bit to help with charities. Raising awareness is important, but it isn’t going to pay for the well needed research for people that suffer with ALS The Ice Bucket Challenge does have it’s bonuses, with people such as Charlie Sheen donating $10,000 to the ALS Foundation instead of the challenge, which is a much better idea than just putting water over your head, isn’t it? CONNOR SARSFIELD The ice bucket challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on a persons head to promote the awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and encourages donations to research. The Ice Bucket Challenge went viral on social media in July/Aug of 2014. Within 24 hours of being challenged, participants have to record a video of themselves in continuous footage. First, they are to announce their acceptance of the challenge followed by pouring ice into a bucket of water. Then, the bucket is to be lifted and poured over the participant's head. Then the participant can call out a challenge to other people. Lots of people film themselves doing this challenge on their phones and send it onto their friends or put it up on facebook for other people to view. As of September 4th the ALS chairity has received 108.4 million dollars in ice bucket challenge donations. Lots of famous celebrities have completed the challenge including Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Ben Affleck, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah and Barack Obama. The origins of the idea of dumping cold water on one's head to raise money for charity are unclear and have been attributed to multiple sources. From mid-2013 to early 2014, a challenge of unknown origin often called the "Cold Water Challenge" became popular on social media in some areas of the United States. The task usually involved the option of either donating money to cancer research or having to jump into cold water. This challenge has got world wide recognition and is a big trend on the internet and this can only progress into more and more success for ALS and other charities
DAVID HUGHES A celebrity that I admire to this day would have to be Thierry Henry who is a current striker for New York Red Bulls in major league soccer. It was when he was playing for Arsenal that Thierry Henry made his name as a world class player. Despite initially struggling in the Premier League, he emerged as Arsenal’s top goal scorer for almost every session of his tenure there. Under long time mentor and coach Arsene Wenger, Henry became a prolific striker and Arsenal’s all time leading goal scorer with 288 goals in all competitions. Henry won two league titles and three FA cups with the Gunners, he was runner up for the FIFA World Player of the Year Award twice. Henry spent his last two seasons with Arsenal leading them to the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final. Henry is known for his style of play on the football field and his personality and visions towards life and football of the field. Off the pitch Henry is an active Spokesperson against Racism in football, partially due to his own experiences. He married English model Nicole Merry in 2003 and had a daughter with her but divorced some time later in 2007. Henry was also one of the top commercially marketed footballers, he was ranked ninth in the world in 2006.
DAVID HUGHES As I was once a first year this is article I can give good tips on. To prevent nervousness in first years, and to help them get around their school with the most ease as possible.
Asking some first years parts they disliked about making their way around the school and getting to know the teachers. They disliked walking past older years at lockers in tight spaces as they felt they would get pushed and shoved about. The best way to get on with teachers is to always be attentive and always complete your homework most teachers will give you one or two chances but if it becomes a regular occurrence teachers may always be watching over you. Survival tips from 1-5 1: Always complete homework 2: Travel in groups or leave a few minutes early for class to avoid corridor jams 3:Look interested in class this way the teacher will never catch you out 4: Obey all rules this way teachers have no way of giving out to you 5:Be respectful to other pupils and teachers if you don't look for trouble trouble more than likely won't find you. I hope my survival tips help you to have a fun and enjoyable first year in CBS Roscommon MICHAEL CONNAUGHTON Russian-Ukrainian Crisis.
It all began as an internal Ukrainian crisis in November 2013, when President Viktor Yanukovych rejected a deal for the chance to get closer with the European Union sparking mass protests, which Yanukovych attempted to put down violently. Russia backed Yanukovych in the crisis, while the US and Europe supported the protesters. Since then, several big things have happened. In February, anti-government protests toppled the government and ran Yanukovych out of the country . Russia, trying to salvage its lost control in Ukraine, invaded and area known as Crimea the next month. In April, pro-Russia separatist rebels began taking territory in eastern Ukraine. The rebels shot down Malaysian airlines flight 17 on July 17th, killing 298 people, probably accidentally but not for certain. Fighting between the rebels and the Ukrainian military intensified, the rebels started losing, and, in August, the Russian army invaded eastern Ukraine to support the rebels. This has all brought the relationship between Russia and the West to its lowest point since the Cold War. Sanctions are pushing the Russian economy to the brink of recession, and more than 2,500 Ukrainians have been killed. A lot of this comes down to Ukraine's centuries-long history of Russian domination. The country has been divided more or less evenly between Ukrainians who see Ukraine as part of Europe and those who see it as intrinsically linked to Russia. Meanwhile, in Russia, Putin is pushing a revival, spreading a nationalist worldview that sees Ukraine as part of greater Russia. JAMES BRANDON There are many wonderful places in the world for us to see wither it be for entertainment, culture, or the landscape the place has to offer. Like many other people I’d love to visit the well known attractions of the world like The Wall of China and The Pyramids of Egypt but above all I’d love to see is Disney World.
In Disney World it is a fun for all adventure. What could be better than meeting all your favourite characters form worldwide known and loved movies such as Toy Story, Monster Inc and The Lion King as well as meeting other famous characters made by Disney such as Mickey Mouse. No matter what age you are you can’t resist having the opportunity of visiting loveable characters like Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the Disney crew and being able to get your picture with all the characters. As well as meeting the Disney characters you can also enjoy the entertaining games the Disney World offer which are based on certain movies or television programs. Apart from the very enjoyable games the theme park offers it also has a very magical look about it with its fluorescent flour arrangements throughout the park and with its amazing means of transport to and from the park as well as round the park with a monorail trip to a boat and the boat to the Disney World island then an open rail ride all the way around the park with various stops. When Walt Disney built this theme park in 1971 his aim was to amaze and inspire people to be and do what ever they wish and that is way Disney World is a place I’d like to see. SEAN DOORLY The Green Flag was launched Thursday the 16th October by the inimitable Mr Kevin McStay. He spoke to us generously sharing stories from his own life and his own experiences including raising the Irish Tricolor and interviewing for the job of Mayo manager. TBC
